THE MIDDLE PASSAGE EXPERIENCE

To many Americans, the Middle Passage is too painful to think about in any detail. Our public schools make the "Africa" part of the equation look like a monolithic place, for the teachers themselves are often not taught about the continent's ethnic and cultural variety, or even the basics of the trade itself.

When Indea Vaher decided to host an exhibit in conjunction with REMEMBRANCE, a worldwide simultaneous libation pouring to honor those lost on the Middle Passage, I got excited. She has a site based on Nachitoches, Louisiana's Metoyer Plantation, now a kind of artist's colony, in SL and RL. Metoyer was built for Marie Coin-Coin (Kwan-Kwan) in the 18th century by her French lover, and the Akan woman and her offspring owned it till well into the 1800s.

In the early 20th century, one of the staff, an elderly African American woman named Clementine Hunter painted scenes of the plantation, and sewed applique quilts depicting it--they are now prized museum works. Indea has a permanent display on indigo cultivation, Creole life and more, and erected Ibo Landing there--a South Carolina debarkation point where Igbo slaves from Nigeria walked into the ocean rather than become enslaved on U.S. soil.

Indea graciously allowed me to create a link to my idea for the African end of the trade, and our own Oliha Yiwama intoned the invocation at Saminaka and the libation at Safe Haven Landing on June 13, just as others did it in Atlanta, San Francisco, Cape Coast in Ghana and elsewhere. Exhibits on both our sims run through June 30.

So what's on Saminaka? I wanted people to come away with a better sense of the specifics--not only of the trade, but the PEOPLE. So I delved into my notes and created stories for ten characters, five male, five female, from different affected areas and eras. Their stories may be fictional, but they're based on fact--as are some of their names. Participants assume their identity through a bio and clothes, then, once they've seen the display, look for a second box with their name on it. Forced to shed their African lives, they are given a new name, Western clothes, and a destination in the U.S. (and can tp to Safe Haven Landing). A reminiscences card follows up on the details of their lives--all the plantations and most of the people mentioned were real. Above, see PHaTTSam Fizz as Boubakar, a Malinke soldier, member of a blacksmith family, and ritual specialist before his capture in Senegal.

I loved doing this. It may be overwhelming, so we're hoping Acuminious Watanabe will be able to conduct a discussion session at Chan Dejavu's Baobab Academy in the next week or two (she wants to! not yet scheduled). People that have stopped by the sim say the experience has moved them; some wondered if it was roleplay (not really, but they have given me some ideas for later). I am very interested in hearing what you have to say about it--send an IM or letter to the editor, please!

UNDER THE MANGO TREE--Tamsin Barzane

When I lived in Nigeria's Middle Belt, the shade of the mango tree was a popular gathering place for friends and family. Laconic and spirited conversations went with the territory, and the Hausa phrase "Ba kome" ("no problem") was the rule. This column will careen from one topic to another, centered on lively observations about Second Life, whether on Saminaka or elsewhere.

Today I'd like to write about a fabulous content creator--we enjoy two of his objects on Saminaka, and will probably add more. His name is Garrin Guffey, a satyr who sells the MG Automagic Weather System. It gathers real world meteorological information (different add on cards simulate different weather zones) and creates weather that matches circumstances. It is the most exciting and realistic weather I've seen in SL--not just simple particles, for instance, but frightening lightning flashes (it IS Saminaka's rainy season), thundrous booms, and more. Yesterday I was talking to Oliha with a few windows open and realized (through the boxes) that I was floating in the air. When I clicked some of the sight interference off, I realized I hadn't accidentally hit a button--a rare tornado had appeared and lifted me up! I look forward to the blackening clouds and had to plant to some grass and flowers to respond to that rain!

Another of Garrin's fabulous contributions can be viewed in our interactive garden--anyone can tend, harvest or plant in it. Just behind the hanging laundry in the Nupe compound, it has a fabulous variety of input--you prepare the earth, choose from many types of seeds to plant, can water, weed or more, and watch it grow over a period of days. No watering? It droops. No spraying with organic products? Bugs gather. It's terrific!

Come see his work and patronize him for your sim--for temperate zones, there are trees that naturally change with the seasons, paths that show their dropped leaves, etc. Second Life's creativity can truly be amazing.

FROM THE SUITCASE--Oliha Yiwama

We are about to land at LOS (Lagos) airport. Nearly all the passengers on this flight are Nigerian. A great cultural preparation--the music, the conversation, and the movies. It is quite exciting. Now I know for sure I'm in Africa. From my window, I can see the palms underneath, and it's early in the morning, with bustle and hustle ahead of me. It's around 87 degrees.

Hmmm, I wonder if Customs will check my suitcase and think I'm importing laces? They have bans on laces--depending on what kind of mood they're in. Mine aren't for sale, they're there to be made up by the tailors, as I mentioned last week. Hmmmm. I sure have plenty of them--I do need my Nigerian caftans! Anyhow, I will be able to get by, with a small tip and a smile. There are a multitude of drivers and baggage boys ready to offer their services.

MMmm, the sweet smells of Lagos. Yes, suya! Can't wait to find my local Hausa suya vendor. Oh, they do know how to barbecue! Here in Lagos, everybody hustles. A little girl just went by carrying four little coffee tables on her head. And the moneychangers--I think the rate is about 140 naira per dollar. Yep, I'm going to do a lot of shopping! Till next time!

Oliha Yiwama left this week for Nigeria and will be sending his column by email, keeping us up to date with real life Nigeria

HAWKING IN THE MARKET--SAMINAKA COMMERCIAL NEWS

**Cinnamon Brigade and Kiko will soon be expanding their Saminaka shops--same locations, just a bigger domain to allow for greater product display and maneuverability. This is predicted to occur within the next week or two

**Cinnamon Brigade and Tropicality (on another sim) will be doing a merchandise transfer. Cinnamon Brigade will show all the traditional African wear, while Tropicality will feature couture Western-style wear from African fabrics. Both will include shoes and men's wear. This transfer begins this week in conjunction with Cinnamon Brigade's overhaul--with new merchandise to be in the stores and completed by next week. You'll like what you see in both spots!

**Saminaka will soon have small market stalls selling jewelry, gestures, and tattoos! A few of these low prim, low priced open shops will be available for rent.

**Midnight Mania boards back! They were briefly gone as the preparations for the Treasure Hunt and the Middle Passage experience were underway, but they're baaaaack! In Cinnamon Brigade, Gidan Magarifi, Tropicality and Pangolin Dreams, from now on these boards will only sell items that have been cycled out of the shops or were once in a treasure hunt--with a few objects promoting a set thrown in from time to time. You know how this works--a free physical slap of the board allows--as long as the quota is made--all slap happy shoppers to get the prize by midnight SLT! Enjoy yours. I will be trying to change them out daily or every other day, depending on rl commitments

**Good initial response--with virtually no publicity, the Saminaka Compass had 46 viewers last week, from places as varied as London, Eastleigh, Sutton, and Manchester in the UK, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Alabama, Texas and West Virginia in the U.S., as well as Winnipeg Canada. Stockholm, Athens, Nassau, Bialystok Poland, Tasmania, Brunei, Brazil, and Indonesia. We shall grow, but we're global already!

**A variety of blogs wrote wonderful things about our treasure hunt--one of the most interesting was a German blog whose author unpacks and photographs treasure prizes, so you can see if a hunt is worth your while! Check out http://sl-schnaeppchen.de/index.php?cont=read&set=10

These shoes are sure to bring out your wild side! You will be prancing and cavorting throughout SL in no time at all.
Look out for many new shoes ahead, including special lines

WETIN BE DAT? Pidgin English phrase of the week

Pidgin English is basically an English vocabulary grafted onto an African grammar, with lots of inventiveness thrown in. Most Nigerians under 70 can speak it--some exclusively, some along with sophisticated standard English. No one wants to give it up--it's too much fun! Here it in some of the song lyrics in the music videos on our huge screen! Each week pidgin phrases will be presented for you to incorporate into your vocabulary and amuse your Nigerian friends! Pronunciation is phonetic.

"Na wat kine wahala be dat?"
"What kind of trouble is going on?"

MY PEOPLE SAY--NIGERIAN PROVERB OF THE WEEK

My favorite--"The tongue must always touch the aching tooth." That is, it's hard to abandon painful thoughts or forget them--our inclination is to probe and measure the discomfort or agony

THIS WEEK IN SAMINAKA--JUNE 15 TO 21

THE MIDDLE PASSAGE EXPERIENCE continues through June 30. Use this interactive tool to find out more about the African beginnings of this horrific voyage by choosing one of 10 specific identities, complete with bios and clothing. As this individual, walk towards the coast--there's a slide show about the trade and many of the coastal ports. Walk through the Door of No Return, a reproduction of the real monument from Ouidah, Republic of Benin, and pass the mourning egungun masquerades as you step onto a raft modeled after the famous slave ship diagram. Flowers honor the dead, and recite sections of voyage narratives when clicked. At the ship's prow, look for a second box with your character's name, and receive your new name, destination in the Americas, and strange new clothing. A notecard with reminiscences tells you what happened in the character's later life. Make history come alive and mourn with us over the lives lost, as well as celebrate the contributions that these unwilling migrants made to the United States.

SAMINAKA'S ORANGE TREASURE HUNT continues through June xx. Have terrific fun wearing your calabash and gathering 20 different prizes, hidden in oranges near the animals on the sim. It's all African animal oriented--see our slide show that gives some clues about animals to look for (as well as pictures and info about Nigerian fauna generally), and enjoy prizes that include references to animal patterns, pictures, etc. Clothes, shoes, furniture, art, jewelry all hidden in those oranges--and anything gender related, like shoes or clothes, is boxed with something for each sex, and is transferable.
